Ancient Origins and Development
Card games emerged in China during the 9th century, evolving from tiles used in Mahjong-like games. By the 10th century, playing cards had spread throughout Asia and gradually made their way westward through trade routes and cultural exchange. When cards arrived in Europe in the 14th century, European artisans began creating standardized decks with the four suits we recognize today: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades.
The earliest European playing cards were hand-painted luxury items for nobility. As printing technology advanced in the 15th century, cards became more accessible to common people. The standardization of card design and manufacturing helped establish the rules and variations of games we know today.
